Sabi Sand or Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park?
The two parks side by side on what you will see, what you can do, what it costs, how you get there and the health picture, with the facts behind every rating.
Our verdict
Hluhluwe-iMfolozi and the Sabi Sand sit at opposite ends of a South African safari. Pick Hluhluwe-iMfolozi to drive yourself on Ezemvelo's tariff: an ordinary car through any of its three gates, a Hilltop rondavel as the cheapest bed inside, game drives and guided walks booked at camp reception, and wilderness trails on foot in an area no vehicle may enter. Elephant, buffalo and nyala are likely there, lion a chance and leopard luck in the thick bush. Pick the Sabi Sand if close leopard matters most: it is guaranteed, along with elephant, every game drive goes in the lodge's own vehicle with a radio network sharing sightings, and you may drive only to your booked lodge. Guided bush walks come with the standard lodge rate. Neither park lists a boat trip, and neither guide gives tsetse as a risk for visitors today.

3The standard lodge rate covers guided bush walks, with age limits such as 16 at Singita and 12 at Dulini. | 5bestGuided walks leave Hilltop and Mpila for up to eight people aged 12 and over, and the iMfolozi wilderness trails spend two to four nights on foot in an area no vehicle may enter, including a Primitive Trail where you carry your pack and sleep out.
2No Sabi Sand page lists night drives; the guide mentions dawn and dusk game drives with sundowners, and an internal curfew clears the roads from 23:30 to 04:30. | 2Only Mpila lists a night drive, Monday to Saturday at 18:00 and Sunday at 17:00; nobody may drive in the park after gate closing without an escort.
1The Sand and Sabie rivers hold hippo and crocodile, but no boat or canoe activity is listed. | 1Ezemvelo's tariff lists no boat trip, and a Hluhluwe Dam cruise mentioned on its 2026 website is unconfirmed; the guide advises against wading or swimming because of bilharzia, crocodiles and hippos.
1You may drive only to your booked lodge on a permit it stamps; there is no self-drive loop and every game drive happens in the lodge's own vehicle. | 4bestAll roads to the three gates are tarred and an ordinary car manages the tar spine and main gravel loops in dry weather, but the rest of the roughly 229 km is gravel, low-level crossings flooded in February 2025 and car hire near the park is difficult.

4bestTwo Londolozi camps take children from six and run a Cubs Den, Sabi Sabi Bush Lodge has the EleFun Centre and Singita Ebony takes all ages; lodges are unfenced and the guide publishes no health or malaria page. | 3Game drives take children from three, Hilltop's 4-bed chalets suit a family and children pay half the conservation fee, but walks start at 12, Mpila is unfenced, the CDC recommends tablets for the district and the guide names no nearby hospital.
5bestLeopard and elephant are guaranteed and lion and buffalo likely, a radio network shares sightings with two to three vehicles each, and scheduled flights land at Skukuza and Kruger Mpumalanga International. | 4On a two or three day self-drive elephant, buffalo, giraffe, nyala and impala are likely and lion and wild dog a chance, 2.6 hours on tar from Durban's airport, though leopard and cheetah are luck in the thick bush.
2No fence with Kruger since 1993, but 39 places to stay share traverses as small as 1,860 ha and sightings are queued by radio at two to three vehicles each. | 3bestThe iMfolozi Wilderness Area, about 25,000 ha, has no roads and no vehicles, but the rest of the park is a public road network with the R618 running through its corridor, and the camps fill in the school holidays. |

How the ratings work
- Big game is calculated from each park's sightings table on its wildlife page: guaranteed counts 3, likely 2, a fair chance 1, rare 0.5 and absent 0, across elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, wild dog, cheetah, hippo and giraffe, scaled so that 16 points is 5 out of 5.
- Birding follows the species count on the wildlife page. Low-budget safari follows the cheapest listed bed, the share of budget places and the daily park fee.
- Walking, night drives, water, self-drive, families, first safari and wilderness are our ratings, whole numbers from 1 to 5. Press "Why?" on any row to read the facts each one rests on, with the page they come from. Where a rule is not published we say so rather than guess.
- Prices are per person per night in US dollars as listed on the lodges pages, before park fees; the three-night totals come from each park's costs page and use the dated rates there. Fees are the international adult rate per day.
